HARRIS GETS ON HIS HORSE

Andrew Harris

He put pen to paper on a new contract in February and has been sporting Winnipeg Blue Bombers colours since.

Andrew Harris passed by another signpost on his way to officially becoming a member of his new club Monday when he pulled on the gold helmet for Day 1 of the club’s mini-camp.

JOE BRYKSA / WINNIPEG FREE PRESSWinnipeg Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris carries the mail during the Winnipeg Blue Bombers mini-camp at Investors Group Field on Monday.

While the regular season is still weeks away, his first stint on the turf at Investors Group Field with his teammates was a big moment, too.

“Today was awesome. Obviously there’s a lot of new stuff we’ve got to put in, but for me it was good just to get running around and meet these guys today and putting the blue and gold on and doing it for real,” said Harris. “It was a good day today.”

Harris figures to play a prominent role in the Bombers’ new offence, just as he did with the B.C. Lions over the last few seasons. He can grind out yards along the ground, but is an effective receiver as well.

Both skills were on full display during Monday’s two practice sessions.

“Now it’s getting into the little details of the offence,” said Harris. “The biggest thing for me now is getting to know my teammates, getting to know the staff and my coaches and building off that.

“I’m happy to be back in my hometown, but ultimately it’s about the team and building that together.”

Harris was a star with the Lions, but the dynamic will be different for him here. He’s a Winnipeg product, front and centre on an offence that struggled last year on a team that has gone a quarter century since its last championship.

And while he knew all this when he signed with the Bombers as a free agent, he also knows this is just the start of what could be an intriguing relationship with his hometown team. Intriguing, as in special when this team is winning and pressure-packed when it is not.

“It’s been great to be back,” said Harris. “I moved back officially about four weeks ago and even going to the grocery store I’m running into people and people are asking for autographs. I can’t really go anywhere now and not get noticed, which is kinda cool. It’s exciting.

“All those things are one thing, but now that we’re getting closer to training camp and it starts for real it’s all about football now.”
